Ctwp Summer institute

Since 1998 more than 200 area K-college teachers have dedicated five weeks to the CTWP Summer Institute to write, research writing, and share best practices. They engage in in depth dialog regarding topics such as approaches to teaching, curriculum planning, assessment, differentiated instruction, technology, and cross-discipline writing practices. They are selected by an application and interview process, and once selected, they are enrolled at Texas State University’s College of Education for 6 hours of graduate work at no cost to them. It can be one of the most transformational experiences in a teacher’s professional life.
After attending the Summer Institute, participants become Teaching Consultants (TCs) for the NWP and engage in numerous professional development activities such as conducting open institutes, inservice workshops for districts and educational service centers, and an annual Young Writers Camp. In addition, TCs present at professional conferences, participate in study groups, and attend writing retreats. CTWP TCs receive opportunities to take leadership roles at the local, state, and/or district levels. For instance, through district partnerships with Hays Consolidated ISD and Comal ISD, TCs in these districts have directed CTWP programs to mentor new teachers, to show multi-discipline faculty groups how to integrate writing instruction, to facilitate year-long book studies using professional literature, and to coach K-12 teachers on strategies that help prepare students for the TAKS test. Because TCs are master teachers and because they are interested in continuing their education and professional growth, they eagerly and diligently accept roles of leadership.
TCs for the CTWP teach in San Marcos, Austin, San Antonio, and all communities along the I35 Corridor. They represent area public school districts, private schools, charter schools, community colleges, and universities.
